Specifically, within both the Office of Criminal Investigations as well as the Office of Protective Intelligence Investigations, DS researchers searched for responsive documents using the Investigative Management System (IMS) a web based application used for managing DS investigations and available to appropriate personnel. Because access are unique to the function of the specific DS office, each conducted a separate search to ensure full coverage.

30. The Office of Legal Adviser (L) is the Department's general counsel's office and furnishes advice on all legal issues, domestic and international, arising in the course of the Department's work. L is divided into component bureaus which correspond to the functional and regional policy offices of the Department. The L component responsible for searching for responsive documents in this case was the Office of Law Enforcement and Intelligence (L/LEI).
31. Attorneys within L?LEI provide legal advice and services in international aspects of law enforcement matters, including the international extradition of fugitives, legal assistance in the administration of justice in criminal matters, international anti-corruption enforcement and international counter-terrorism efforts. Additionally within L/LEI routinely provide legal advice to Department policy bureaus on international anti-narcotics, antiterrorism, corruption, and trafficking in persons issues, and to the Bureau of Diplomatic Security on law enforcement issues. |
